From Butler MO to Bullock Island is a charming memoir describing throwback times, as if the twentieth century had not arrived in rural Butler, Missouri, or Maryland's isolated Bullock Island, owned by a single family.

Both places were too out of the way to be reached by modern utilities and services. Author Betty Fuqua describes life in those distant but equally isolated places, from her pre-electrifiction childhood as an able farm girl to her management of a family on an island, where the only power came from 1930s generator and the daily commute to school or work was by boat-regardless of the weather. Betty, a working mother, commuted daily to Patuxent Air Naval Station, where she was a highly ranked legal technician. Her husband, the D.C. basketball phenom Frank Fuqua, adds the drama of the unexpected to Betty''s life and story, Her recall and writing are so aptly detailed that the reader travels on her words to the times and places of her life. Thus reading From Butler, Missouri to Maryland's Bullock Island is an immersion in earlier and rare pages of American history.

A Little About Us

What’s a writer without a reader but a voice calling out in the wilderness?

What’s a reader without a writer?

There is no such thing. Uniting writers and readers over good stories (poems, too) is the mission of New Bay Books, a new publishing house for Chesapeake Country. To that mission, my New Bay Books partner (and husband) William Lambrecht and I bring more than a quarter century of experience.

The mission inspired us to join with son Alex Knoll to create New Bay Times newspaper back in 1993 and to sustain a journalism enterprise for twenty-seven buffeting years. New Bay Times became Bay Weekly, and was sold to Chesapeake Bay Media in 2020. The mission — finding, developing, editing, publishing and distributing good stories for good reading — continues with New Bay Books.

What does our mission mean for you?

To readers, New Bay Books brings good books …

To writers, New Bay Books brings opportunity ...
