Short Stories By George Miller.

Sixteen short stories, many of which sprouted on a commuter train between Washington D.C. and western Maryland over three decades. Some lay dormant in a shoebox on the floor of a bedroom closet until revived for this compilation. George Miller, an entrepreneur and former federal official, recalls in his introduction to Loaded for Bear that most trains sported a party car and that passengers leaving stressful jobs in the world's most powerful city boarded with a briefcase and stories to share. But Miller, a lifelong Marylander, allows that some of the stories herein - among them Loaded for Bear, Breech Birth and Green Card - took root from his own experiences..

Miller also is the author of The Best Free Verse Ten Dollars Can Buy, a book of poems, Cooper Finds Her Thermal, an illustrated allegory, and other works. His writing has appeared in American Writers Review and other literary outlets.

“George Miller is a weaver who celebrates life in a tapestry of compelling tiles that are anything but average,” Don Shomette, an author and history, writes on the book’s back cover. “His soft humor, embellished with a topping of intimacy, soul and nostalgia, always rings true."

A Little About Us

What’s a writer without a reader but a voice calling out in the wilderness?

What’s a reader without a writer?

There is no such thing. Uniting writers and readers over good stories (poems, too) is the mission of New Bay Books, a new publishing house for Chesapeake Country. To that mission, my New Bay Books partner (and husband) William Lambrecht and I bring more than a quarter century of experience.

The mission inspired us to join with son Alex Knoll to create New Bay Times newspaper back in 1993 and to sustain a journalism enterprise for twenty-seven buffeting years. New Bay Times became Bay Weekly, and was sold to Chesapeake Bay Media in 2020. The mission — finding, developing, editing, publishing and distributing good stories for good reading — continues with New Bay Books.

What does our mission mean for you?

To readers, New Bay Books brings good books …

To writers, New Bay Books brings opportunity ...
