Finding delights in our One Maryland/One Book assignment

Delve into a book of essays with something for all in the Calvert Library’s One Book hosting featuring Ross Gay’s fast-seller Book of Delights in Zoom gatherings on September Wednesdays. An initiative is underway to convince the whole darn state of Maryland to read and discuss the book, which consists of year-long musings about things that often go unspoken, some bringing “flummoxment” — Gay’s word in prose that one reviewer calls “a miracle.”

The Calvert Library’s online sessions lead up to a live gathering in addition to Zoom on Monday evening, Oct. 4, in which New Bay Books publisher Sandra Olivetti Martin and friends will hold a writing workshop using Gay’s “The Book of Delights” title. Martin, a writing teacher for decades and co-founder of Bay Weekly, will lead participants including local authors in “finding words to describe the wonders in your world.” The Calvert County Health Dept. recommends masks for those participating in library meeting rooms.

A Little About Us

What’s a writer without a reader but a voice calling out in the wilderness?

What’s a reader without a writer?

There is no such thing. Uniting writers and readers over good stories (poems, too) is the mission of New Bay Books, a new publishing house for Chesapeake Country. To that mission, my New Bay Books partner (and husband) William Lambrecht and I bring more than a quarter century of experience.

The mission inspired us to join with son Alex Knoll to create New Bay Times newspaper back in 1993 and to sustain a journalism enterprise for twenty-seven buffeting years. New Bay Times became Bay Weekly, and was sold to Chesapeake Bay Media in 2020. The mission — finding, developing, editing, publishing and distributing good stories for good reading — continues with New Bay Books.

What does our mission mean for you?

To readers, New Bay Books brings good books …

To writers, New Bay Books brings opportunity ...
